Movable Type Clone Wars

No, it’s not your imagination, our blog has had a makeover! I upgraded to Movable Type 4.0 a while back, but did nothing to the templates or anything else that make 4.0 cool. Various things broke (like categories) and I would get strange incomprehensible database errors from time to time, all of which I ignored. Until now. Only a little blood, sweat and tears was involved.

To anybody contemplating the upgrade and necessary remodel, here’s how I did it, gleaned from various Internet sources, NOT from the MT documentation. First, export all of your current blog’s entries. Second, create a whole new blog using MT 4 templates and styles sheets. Third, import all of the old blog’s entries to the new blog and make sure everything is copasetic. Fourth, spend hours and hours tweaking the templates so that your sidebar and other specialized content appears correctly. Fifth, once the new blog is looking good, make a clone of it. Sixth, once the clone is created, nuke the old blog. That’s right, nuke it. Sixth, rename the clone your old blog’s name and be sure to edit the paths to match the old blog’s (blog URL and site path). Republish the clone et voila! You have successfully upgraded your old blog to the all new template designs of Movable Type 4!

Now I could use a stiff drink.
